The first USB PD 3.1 EPR 28V Type-C® Port Protector is launched
Hsinchu, September 7, 2023 -- Fortune Advanced Technology today launched its first-ever USB PD 3.1 EPR 28V Type-C® Port Protectors
The USB PD 3.1 EPR 28V Port Protector product series of Fortune Advanced Technology includes three products FA2215/FA2216/FA2217, which support 4-channel (CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2) overvoltage protection. For more information, please refer to "Home > Products > USB Type-C Solutions > Type-C Port Protectors".
Due to the extremely small size of the USB Type-C® connector, the CC1/CC2 and SBU1/SBU2 pins are located next to the VBUS pins, each pin is very close, and the minimum spacing is only 0.5mm. Therefore, mechanical twisting and sliding of the connector, moisture or debris, or poorly designed wires and equipment may cause a short circuit between the VBUS pin and the CC or SBU pin.
Since the release of the USB Type-C® connector, many USB Type-C® products and accessories that do not comply with the USB Type-C® specification have been released. An example is USB Type-C® Power Delivery adapters that only provide 20V on the VBUS line.
This will cause a short circuit between the 20V VBUS pin and the CC or SBU pin, causing damage to the CC or SBU and related circuits. This non-ideal equipment and mechanical events make CC and SBU pins must be able to withstand 20V voltage, even if these pins can only work at 5V or lower.
In addition, with the introduction of USB PD 3.1 EPR, the VBUS pin can now carry voltage levels up to 28V because USB PD 3.1 EPR allows the VBUS voltage to be increased to 28V through the Power Delivery protocol.
Our FA2215/FA2216/FA2217 are single-chip USB PD 3.1 EPR 28V Type-C® port protectors, which can respectively provide 32V/32V/32V short-to-VBUS overvoltage protection for the C_CC1, C_CC2, C_SBU1, and C_SBU2 pins on the connector side.
If the voltage is higher than the overvoltage threshold, the switch will be quickly opened, and the response time of the overvoltage protection can reach 100ns, then the CC1, CC2, SBU1, and SBU2 on the system side can be protected from high voltage.
In addition, FA2216/FA2217 also integrates the electrostatic discharge (ESD) discharge path of the D+/D- channel. According to the requirements of IEC61000-4-2 for electrostatic discharge protection, FA2216/FA2217 provide ±8KV electrostatic contact discharge and ±15KV electrostatic air discharge protection for Dx(D+/D-), C_CC1, C_CC2, C_SBU1, and C_SBU2 pins, without the need to place external high-voltage transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes on the connector side, which helps reduce costs.
Finally, FA2215/FA2216/FA2217's internal C_SBUx to SBUx MOSFET switches have a -3dB bandwidth of up to 1000MHz, providing an integrated solution for overvoltage protection and electrostatic protection without affecting the integrity of high-speed signals.
Package and availability
WLCSP 1.67x1.67-16L packaged FA2215 and QFN 3x3-20L packaged FA2216/FA2217 can be obtained through authorized distributors in September 2023. Full and custom quantity reels are available.
